Delegation of Pomeranian University in Słupsk in Washington
In connection with the admission of Pomeranian University in Słupsk to a group of universities upholding the principles outlined in the Magna Charta Universitatum 2020 document, representatives of our University are participating in an international conference titled "Universities, Governments, and Democracy: International Challenges, Lessons Learned and Future Strategy." The event is organized by the Magna Charta Observatory in cooperation with PEN America at the Johns Hopkins University Bloomberg Center. Our University is represented by the Rector, professor Zbigniew Osadowski, and the Vice-Rector for Development and Cooperation, professor Marek Łukasik.
The conference topics focus on the fundamental rights and obligations of universities towards society, as defined in the Magna Charta Universitatum (MCU). Specific themes include academic freedom, autonomy, university governance, diversity, communication, and the role of students and their contribution to the common good. In the opening speech, the situation of Polish universities in the context of the war in Ukraine was highlighted. The conference offers opportunities for open discussion, sharing best practices, and providing substantive support to universities facing challenges related to the values outlined in the MCU.
The Magna Charta Observatory was established in 2000 to promote the core values that have enabled Universities worldwide to enrich their societies for generations. To date, over 970 universities from 94 countries have signed the Magna Charta Universitatum. This year, our University’s application was positively reviewed by the Magna Charta Observatory and we have become signatories of this important document.
