The beginnings

Pomeranian University in Słupsk is a state school of higher education with an over 50-year long tradition. It was founded in 1969 as Teacher’s College, developing dynamically in the subsequent years to become a modern university offering Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degree courses, pursuing innovative research and cooperating with numerous international partners.

Originally, the College created three faculties, and welcomed 271 students majoring in six fields of study. Three years later, in 1972, the first 240 undergraduates earned their degrees. A year later the School started enrollment in the four-year Master's degree programme. In 1974, the College was transformed into the Higher Pedagogical School, with around 1,000 undergraduates and graduates studying at the institution.

The 1980s

With a little over 2,700 students and 209 academic staff, the Higher Pedagogical School entered the 1980s as a well-functioning institution educating teachers. Due to intensive construction works in the previous decade, the 1980s welcomed the campus on Krzysztofa Arciszewskiego Street fully functional. When the School celebrated its 20th anniversary in 1989, there were 3,090 students learning there, an increase of 15% compared to the figures 10 years earlier.

The 1990s

The last decade of the 20th century did not only mark the change of the political system in Poland, but it also brought about a number of changes at our university. The first steps to become a full-fledged university had been taken, mainly by obtaining the right to confer doctoral degrees in two disciplines (biology and history) and overhauling its educational offer.  This led to the transformation of the Higher Pedagogical School into Pomeranian Pedagogical University in the year 2000.

The 2000s

The new millennium marked rapid development of the university, with numerous investments in the infrastructure, including the opening of the most representative building of the university at Westerplatte Street (called ‘The Castle’) in 2006. Also, there were further changes in the educational offer, which dynamically changed to adapt to the current job market. The changes were reflected in the change of the name of the university into Pomeranian University in Słupsk.

The Present Day

Pomeranian University in Słupsk has been developing rapidly in the past few years, with two more rights to confer doctoral degrees granted (history and literature), and the total number of graduates reaching 50,000. The merger of the Higher Hanseatic School of Management with Pomeranian University in Słupsk in 2016 turned out to be an impulse for the strengthening and the standing of the institution. The University also benefited from European Funds, which were used to equip world-class teaching and research labs in various disciplines, including medical rescue or cybersecurity. The last ten years have also seen an extensive internationalization of Pomeranian University in Słupsk. The institution has signed numerous agreements with European, Asian and American universities. Many foreign students complete part of their studies in Słupsk within the framework of the Erasmus+ Programme, the Double Degree Programme, the Semester Exchange Programme, among others. More and more frequently foreign languages fill lecture halls and can be heard across campuses.

We have become full classical University

The date of 1 June 2023 will forever be written in the history of Pomeranian University in Słupsk.  It is on this day that our institution became a full (classical) University! The status upgrade is a result of years-long hard work of our researchers, positive outcome of last year’s research output evaluation as well as incessant work of the university management towards this goal. The Polish name of our university changed from Akademia Pomorska w Słupsku into Uniwersytet Pomorski w Słupsku. The English name remains unchanged.
