A fantastic time for our University - looking back at the year 2023
Reflecting on the year 2023 fills us with a sense of pride and nostalgia, as it marked a truly remarkable chapter in the history of our beloved Alma Mater. The highlight of the year was undoubtedly the attainment of the full, classical university status, a monumental achievement that symbolises our institution's commitment to excellence and academic advancement.
As we take a stroll down memory lane, we are reminded of the extraordinary moments that defined the past twelve months. From groundbreaking achievements to historic milestones, 2023 will be a year to remember in our university's legacy
January
We supported the 31st Finale of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity. Auctions were held in Hala Gryfia, during which the participants could bid for attractive items, including those donated by the University. And just like every year, we also set up a donation box at the Rector's Office.
February
We obtained the highest number of rights to confer doctoral and postdoctoral degrees in our history and met the requirements to become a full classical university!
March
The Sejm, that is the lower chamber of the Polish Parliament, passed a bill to raise the status of our institution to that of a full classical university. This success was the culmination of many years of effort by the entire academic community. It was also a historic moment for our city, region and a great opportunity for further development of the University.
April
This was the time of educational advancement. Our University became more recognisable in other academic centres, owing to which more and more students from all over the world are beginning to study in Słupsk.
May
Our students and staff once again became involved in the life of the region. The first of the three mobile blood donation campaigns planned for the year took place, attracting record interest.
After a three-year break, the student parade returned to the streets of Słupsk, and the Pomeranian University’s last Juwenalia (a yearly student festival) ended with the loud sounds of hip-hop bass.
June
June began in a fantastic way from the very first day of the month. On that day, the bill entered into force as law and we officially became a full, classical university.
We also celebrated the Day of Science and Sport in the company of the youngest citizens of Słupsk.
The University Anniversary Event at the Pomeranian University in Słupsk was opened by the Rector, professor Zbigniew Osadowski, with the following words:
- It is with pride and joy that I can announce we are celebrating the inaugural University Anniversary Event here at the Pomeranian University in Słupsk. I am glad that you are with us at this important and historic moment for our institution. So for the very first time, I would like to say: welcome to our University!
The new visual design and logo of the Pomeranian University of Słupsk was officially unveiled this month. It was prepared by the Slupsk-based Rio Creativo studio.
The first University Picnic was also held on our campus.
A group of biology students conducted their first research at our research and teaching station in Grzmiąca.
June saw the start of the long-awaited modernisation of the car park on the University campus at Bohaterów Westerplatte and Kozietulskiego Streets.
July
The first students graduated with diplomas from Pomeranian University in Słupsk after it had gained full classical university status.
August and September
This was a time of renovations and major investments at all campuses of our University.
October
Pomeranian University in Słupsk held the ceremonial Inauguration of the academic year 2023/2024, the first in our history as a full, classical university.
The new academic year was officially opened by the Rector, professor Zbigniew Osadowski, with the words: ”I warmly welcome you to the 55th Inauguration of the academic year at our Alma Mater. The fact that this is the first historic inauguration at Pomeranian University of Słupsk as a full classical university is a source of pride for us and fills us with optimism for the future!“
We were delighted to learn that the Prime Minister had granted a 30 million PLN bond for the expansion of our University's research and teaching infrastructure.
November
The University Student Club kicked off the new academic year with a concert.
A simulation courtroom was opened at the premises of our University so that the students learning to become future lawyers could gain practical knowledge without leaving the walls of our University.
December
We received the largest-ever funding - 60 million PLN - for the development of Pomeranian University in Słupsk. The announcement came from Piotr Müller, the government spokesman and Member of Parliament for the Sejm of the Republic of Poland.
In a heartfelt expression of gratitude, the Rector, professor Zbigniew Osadowski extended his sincere thanks to Mr. Müller. He further remarked, "These funds will open doors for further development of our University. They will kickstart a myriad of initiatives, ranging from renovation and construction endeavours to the enhancement of our IT infrastructure and Library facilities. Additionally, we aim to prioritise the development of green spaces and expand our Research and Teaching Station in Grzmiąca. With this substantial investment, our University is poised to emerge as a prominent hub for research, development, and education, not only on the national but also on the international stage."
Before Christmas, a St. Nicholas’ Day workshop was held under the motto "Science - Knowledge - Fun", which attracted children and grandchildren of the employees of the Pomeranian University in Słupsk. The event was attended by more than 200 people - both children and adults.
